Percentage Decrease Calculator

How much did a value fall, as a percentage of where it started?

Quick answer: a decrease from 92 to 80 is −13.04% — (80 − 92) ÷ 92 × 100 = −13.04%.

The formula

Percentage decrease = (old − new) ÷ old × 100. The denominator is always the old value. Note the asymmetry with increases: falling from 92 to 80 is a 13.04% decrease, but climbing back from 80 to 92 takes a 15% increase. Percentages going down and coming back up are measured against different bases, so they are never equal.

Worked examples

A jacket marked down from 120 to 90 fell by 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%. A value can never decrease by more than 100% — a 100% decrease means it reached zero. To apply a decrease instead — "what is 200 decreased by 15%?" (= 170) — use the Decrease by % mode on the main calculator, or the discount calculator for prices.
